You don't tell the nine-year-old

They're depressed

You say

Here, drink this

As they're halfway out the door

A little cup of liquid Lexapro

Oughtta do the trick

Right?

They drink, and it goes down bitter

But not even half as bitter

As your nine-year-old

You take them to therapy

But you don't call it therapy

Let them figure it out

On their own

You don't tell the nine-year-old

They're depressed

You don't say

We knew this was coming

And we know what comes next

Because your nine-year-old

Asks questions

And you don't

Tell your nine-year-old

You're depressed

Sam Doe hails from Northampton, Massachusetts, lives in Allston, Massachusetts, and is still not exactly comfortable calling himself a poet.
